How many Women have Abortions?

Women have abortions for various reasons and everyone has a different reason for considering an abortion as a solution. You may be surprised to know that around 1% of all abortions carried out in England, Scotland and Wales were because the baby would have been born with a disability.

The latest figures published in 2009 show that around 200,000 women each year have an abortion in England and Wales and around 14,000 in Scotland. That’s around 600 abortions each day! Most of these are funded by the NHS although in some cases the NHS paid for the women to go to a Private Clinic for treatment.

With so many abortions being carried out each year you can rest assured that the people in the clinic are highly trained and experienced specialists. The majority of these abortions were carried out in the first trimester under 13 weeks pregnant.
