Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a surgical procedure which is used in cases of obstructive sleep apnoea. It involves a removal of your soft palate, uvula and tonsils to aid better breathing and lessen snoring. The procedure will only be carried out should it be these parts of your airways that are causing the blockage, and obese people may find that they do not benefit from this surgery. With obesity, fatty tissue may be blocking other areas of the airways and contributing to the sleep apnoea/snoring. If you are suffering from sleep apnoea and you have this surgery, it is important that you continue to monitor your sleeping patterns to assess whether you are still having pauses in your breathing. The UPPP may remove the snoring, but may not remove the paused breathing.
