Breast Implant Scare
Saturday 19th June 2010
Thousands of British women could be at risk after dangerous breast implants were used in their breast enlargement surgery, doctors warn. It is feared that up to 50,000 women could have been given implants containing a type of silicon that has not undergone safety tests and may have a faulty lining that could leak harmful substances into the body. Doctors are urging women who have recently had their breasts enlarged to contact their surgeons and query the implants used in their surgery.
The warnings have come after a health watchdog started to investigate reports that the implants were more likely to rupture than other brands. Investigators found that the gel used in the implants had not been properly safety tested as it was designed to be used in mattresses.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has told surgeons to stop using the implants. Doctors recommend that women who have been given the faulty implants to have an ultrasound test to check for any splits or damages.
