Root Resection Surgery Risks

Like all types of surgery, there is some risk involved.

  • Infection.  All surgery carries a small risk of infection.  These are easily treatable with antibiotics so long as they are caught early in their development.  You must seek medical advice as early as possible if you are concerned about this.
  • Accidental damage.  This surgery is quite severe, and might cause fractures or damage to surrounding teeth.
  • Hole in the sinus.  This is rare but can occur when the upper molars are being treated.  Normally such a hole will close itself naturally although there might be instances where further surgery might be necessary.
  • Nerve Damage.  The lower molars are located close to some large nerves in the jaw, and damage to these could result in numbness in the area.
