Are hair transplants carried out by surgeons?

Hair transplantation is a form of surgery, and as a result your surgeon will need all of the qualifications necessary to perform aesthetic or cosmetic surgery.  It is seriously important that you research into your surgeon, and can have complete confidence in them and their abilities.

Finding a Surgeon

The best way to find a good cosmetic surgeon is through word of mouth, from someone you know and trust who has already had surgery performed by them.  Alternatively there is information available to you through the General Medical Council, (GMC), or through the Institute of Trichologists.  Lists of properly qualified surgeons within your area can be found online, or you can phone them for the relevant information.  You GP might know of someone within your area who can perform hair transplants

Surgeons Qualifications

For someone to perform hair transplant surgery they will need to hold qualifications such as:

  • FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons)
  • BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons)
  • BACS (British Association of Cosmetic Surgeons)

If these abbreviations are not present after your surgeons name then you will need to question their expertise within the field of hair transplantation.  It might also be worthwhile to ask your surgeon about their experience, and to talk to someone who has had surgery at their clinic.  The more you find out about your surgeon the greater your trust will be in them.

If you are having the surgery abroad then it is very important that you ensure that you surgeon is properly trained to perform a hair transplant surgery.  Different countries have different standards and you must make sure that you are happy with the training that your surgeon has undergone.
