New Research on Post-Vasectomy Semen Samples

Sunday 13th June 2010

Patients may not have to provide multiple semen samples following vasectomy surgery due to new research published in The Netherlands. A study published in urology journal, BJUI, showed that 96% of men were given the 'all clear' after specialists carried out one simple test just three months after surgery. Researchers claim that adopting the definitive test could save patients making repeated and unnecessary visits to their urologist.

Experts explain that in the year immediately following a vasectomy, patients may still produce immotile sperm. These emissions stop medical clearance being granted to the patient - who under current guidelines must produce multiple sperm-free samples.

The dutch scientists behind this new research, however, claim that up to 96% of men could be cleared using one test. The researchers also argue that men who produce immotile sperm should still be clinically cleared - claiming that the residual sperm is redundant and cannot cause pregnancy.
