Food additive intolerance is probably one of the more recent food intolerances to be established.

What are food additives?

Food additives are chemical added to foods to increase shelf-life and enhance the flavour and colour of the product. They can be split into a number of different categories such as:


  • Artificial colouring and flavourings
  • Antioxidants
  • Preservatives
  • Emulsifiers
  • Sweeteners
  • Flavour enhancers

Who is likely to be affected by food additive intolerance?

Food additive intolerance can be due to a genetic trait, which had only recently be seen due to the only recent use of food additives in our food products. Also, those who have asthma and other allergies are more likely to have a food additive intolerance.

What causes food additive intolerance?

Food additive intolerance is not understood fully, but there are suggestions that food additive intolerance is the effect of the food additive making an existing food intolerance worsen.
