While acne varies in type and severity from person-to-person, there are some simple rules which will ensure that you do not aggravate your acne and which will help you care for your skin the in best possible way. Of course, if your acne is moderate-to-severe, or is causing you any concern, you should consult your dermatologist or doctor. These rules will not cure or completely prevent the occurrence of acne. Instead they are helpful tips that will help you care for your skin properly and avoid further damage:
- DO wash your face once or twice a day to remove dirt and make up. This is especially important.
- DO make sure you use a gentle, non-drying soap and lukewarm water.
- DO NOT wash your face excessively, this will only worsen your acne.
- DO NOT use oil-based soaps, cleansers or cosmetics.
- DO look for products that are labelled oil-free, water-based or non-comedogenic.
- DO shampoo your hair daily to avoid a build-up of grease.
- DO try to keep your hair away from your face as much as possible.
- DO NOT touch your face with your hands and fingers; this can spread bacteria around the face.
- DO try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, eat a balanced diet, exercise and avoid smoking and excessive drinking.
- DO avoid excessive amounts of sunlight. While a tan may hide the effects of acne for a short period UV can ultimately worsen acne.
- DO NOT use sun beds.
- DO use a high-factor, non-comedogenic sun cream.
- ABSOLUTELY DO NOT pick, scratch, squeeze, touch or otherwise tamper with any inflammations you may have - this can introduce more bacteria to the skin and can even result in permanent scarring.
- DO NOT hesitate to consult your doctor or dermatologist if you are unhappy or concerned about your acne.
