Dentistry Regulation in Greece
Find UK Dentists »
In Greece, dental care follows the same pattern as general healthcare in that it is freely available to all residents, including foreigners living in the country. However unless you fulfil certain criteria (that you must talk to the clinic about beforehand) if you are travelling to Greece for dental care then you will be seeking a private clinic. However the prices of these private clinics are still very reasonable compared to prices in the UK and the rest of the developed world in general, and capitalist aims of a private institution are just some of the reasons that Greek dental clinics are very competitive in quality.
Qualifications of Dentists in Greece
As Greek dentists are likely to be trained either in Greece (usually in Athens or Thessalika) or the UK, you can readily check any UK qualifications out with the UK’s General Dental Council or Dentist Register, but make sure the qualification is up to date! Similarly you may have to investigate with the particular training institution if you come across a dentist who has studied in America: Greek dentists who have trained in either the UK or the USA do not require any further qualifications from the Greek dental boards. Ultimately the qualification to practise comes from the local dental authority (such as the Athens Dental Association), so you will have to find out where your dentist has his or her qualification from, and then contact the organisation. Licences are given by the Health Services Department of the Municipal Government, by word of the local dental authority, so you could also contact this institution to ratify the qualification. If on the off-chance you are considering a public Greek dentist then you might also wish to contact the Hellenic Society of Periodontology, which ultimately presides over all public Greek dental clinics. Similarly, some private dentists (typically those with an American qualification) are members of the Hellenic American Dental Association, so you may well also wish to contact this organisation.
Accreditation of Dental Practices in Greece
As with other countries, it is often the case that Greek dental practices will be accredited by foreign standards bodies. However in Greece these practices are also regulated by the government-sanctioned Hellenic Dental Association (HDA), so you can find out from these organisations whether or not the practice is suitable for your treatment.
