What is a dental implant?

A dental implant, simply put, is an artificial root placed within your jaw to which replacement teeth can be fixed. This root is often made out of titanium, an extremely durable metal that actually integrates into your jaw bone. The result is a strong base to which a denture or artificial tooth can be fixed.

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth without the hassle of taking dentures in and out. Moreover the robustness of the screw means that your replacement tooth is much more stable which improves its all round use as a tooth in terms of chewing and speech.

How is a dental implant done?

The first stage to having a dental implant put in is to undergo a consultation (which in many Slovakian dental clinics can be free) during which X-rays are conducted and the treatment discussed with you. After the planning phase, the surgical implant stage is conducted while you are either under general or local anaesthesia, the former leaving you unconscious for the procedure, while the latter numbs the area being worked on. When you are under anaesthesia your dentist will expose the jaw bone and fix the artificial root into it, before closing your gums back up with stitches. It can take anywhere from 3-6 months for the bone around your new implant to heal, at this stage the implant is exposed again and your artificial tooth or denture is fixed to it.
