Side Effects of Champix

Even though the new pill Champix all sounds very wonderful by helping smokers quit smoking, it must be treated seriously and with caution. Champix is technically a safe drug as it has been allowed onto the market. Champix was approved by The European Commission on the 29th of September 2006 as they deemed it a useful tool to aid adults in their quest to quit smoking. Previously in May 2006, the FDA also approved the drug. This suggests that Champix is a safe pill to use to help you quit smoking; however there have been some negative side effects which have been associated with the drug, with most users reporting both physical and mental side effects.

Physical side effects

Unfortunately, people who take Champix may have a physical reaction to the drug which is not very pleasant and is very uncomfortable. The most common physical side effect reported is nausea; however there are other physical side effects which include:

  • Vomiting/nausea
  • Migraines
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Wind (flatulence)
  • Constipation
  • Erectile dysfunction (an uncommon side effect, 1 in 1000 Champix users)

It is possible to have a reaction to Champix which is not stated above, and if you feel you have a side effect as a result from using Champix, you must consult a medical professional immediately.

Mental side effects

As well as physical side effects, there have been reports of mental side effects which are linked to the use of Champix. These can be emotionally and mentally draining, and the effects include:

  • Depression
  • Psychosis
  • Changes in behaviour (mood swings)
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviour

Although, it is important to note that an official link has not yet been recognised as more research is required.  However, if any of these symptoms are showing, you must stop taking the drug and seek medical advice. The FDA issued a warning on this subject matter.
