Structure of the Evra Patch

The Evra patch is designed to be small but effective and stick to your body regardless of the situation you are in. It is a small square that is skin coloured and measures approximately five centimetres by five centimetres. It is very thin to allow the hormones to transfuse easily through your skin and consists of three layers. It is also waterproof so that its efficacy and adhesiveness will not be affected if you have a bath, shower or go for a swim.

The outer layer is the waterproof layer, which protects the hormones inside from any water damage. It also stops them from being rubbed off onto articles of clothing for instance. It is made out of polyester, which gives the patch its structure.

The middle layer is the layer that contains the hormones and is the part that sticks to your skin.  It contains lauryl lactate, a polyester fabric, an adhesive material and the hormones Ethinylestradiol and Norelgestromin.

The inner layer is the part you peel off from the patch. It keeps the adhesive part sticky so that it does not lose its properties. Each patch is contained in a small pouch that comes in a box. The patches are best stored at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Do not remove the patch from its package until you are ready to use it.

The patch and allergic reactions

If you experience an allergic reaction, it is probably due to one of the materials or products used to make the patch.  Your skin may become irritated at the site where you have stuck the patch. If the skin is not too badly irritated then when you change the patch, apply it to a different area of skin. If this does not help the irritation then consult your doctor. You must also consult your doctor if you experience any difficulty breathing, hives or swelling of your mouth.
