Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
Periodic Limb Movement disorder is characterised by jerks and spasms in the legs during your sleep which will often disturb you and cause a reduced quality of sleep. The spasms normally occur almost every minute. This disorder is also linked with Restless Legs Syndrome, but they are two different kinds of disorders and are not to be confused. Whilst RLS is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs due to varied sensations you may experience in your legs, PLMD is instead an uncontrollable movement that occurs spontaneously and very frequently during the night. It can be a disorder in itself, and the cause be unknown, or it can be the result of a different disease. The treatment of periodic limb movement disorder is quite similar to that of restless legs syndrome.
