Gastric Band Surgery Aftercare
Once you have had a Gastric band fitted it is equally as important to follow the correct after care method. This will ensure the operation is as successful as possible. For the first 24 hours following the operation you will stay in hospital, where a drip will be placed in your arm, to ensure you receive the right amount if nutrients, when you feel you can you will be encouraged to sip water yourself and to become active around the hospital, this will reduce the risk of blood clots and chest infections.
Care From Yourself
You will be required to follow a specific diet, and exercise regime which will maximise the successfulness of the gastric band. You will also be required to look after your surgical wound, using the right equipment; you will however receive adequate advice on these matters from the nurse before your discharge from hospital.
Care From Medical Staff
Your doctors and nurses will provide for you the correct medical aftercare with regards to any complications or medical worries you may have. They will assist in any adjustments you may need to have with your Gastric band and will also assist in providing you with the guidance you need on your changed lifestyle and diet on discharge from the hospital.
After Care Packages Available
You will usually receive an aftercare package which entails all the information you need to achieve the most success from your band, and to keep yourself in good health. Usually you will receive access to a 24 hour emergency treatment line, in case of any complications or general worries, you will have access to specialist nurses and surgeons for a specific amount of time after your surgery if clinically needed, many medical institutes offer free band adjustments again for a specific amount of time after your surgery, this is usually within the 24 months following your procedure. Packages will also include advice for changes in your lifestyle, and how to cope with them, as well as how to cope with such rapid changes in diet. Often clinics have dieticians and fitness advisers available to you on request.
Aftercare From Abroad
If you have or are considering surgery abroad, your aftercare packages may differ slightly from those you receive in UK clinics. Often the surgery abroad will have a centre in the UK in which all the aftercare will be dealt with, many surgeons will visit these UK clinics on a regular basis, often visits are made once a week. Surgeries abroad are required to comply with strict international guidelines which state that a satisfactory amount of aftercare must be provided to anyone who requires it after their surgery.
