Private Revision Weight Loss Surgery
Many individuals choose to have surgery privately as it can reduce wait time, and can often offer a larger range of surgery available to them. If you find that you need revision surgery after your initial surgery is failing to achieve the results you feel it should be achieving then one option for you is to go private. You will of course still need to meet guidelines set out in the UK when being considered for any kind of weight loss surgery.
Requirements
The requirements are the same as what is expected of you for surgery with the NHS. You must show that surgery is a last option to you, that by all means necessary you have attempted weight loss and none of these attempts have worked. You should also prove that you are willing to follow a strict diet and exercise regime once you have had your surgery, and you should also have a BMI of over 35. Patients whose BMI is between 35 and 39 should also suffer from any health issue which can be improved by adequate weight loss – for example Type 2 Diabetes or High blood Pressure. You should also be able to show that your previous surgery has been ineffective and is causing you to gain weight, or to have come to a weight standstill (meaning you are staying the same weight no matter what your efforts), with certain weight loss procedures you may be able to demonstrate that they are not working through specific attributes, for example with the Gastric band procedure your band may have slipped and you may only require it to be replaced.
What types of revision surgery will they offer me?
If you meet the specific requirements and are deemed a good candidate for revision surgery private clinics will usually offer you revision surgery in the form of 4 different types of Bariatric surgery these are:
- Gastric Band: Usually between £4,000 and £10,000 –average cost of around £7,000
- Gastric Bypass: Usually between £8,000 and £10,000.
- Duodenal Switch: Usually between £10,000 and £13,500.
- Biliopancreatic diversion: Usually between £10,000 and £15,000.
It is usually down to what is thought will be the best method both by yourself and the advice given from a medical team, you will have access to this information if you attend a consultation with the clinic (usually free of charge.)
Financial information
As you can see there is normally quite a range between the lower and higher price for each type of surgery, this is often due to the types of aftercare package and support team that you will have access too. Private clinics will most likely offer you consultations free of charge therefore you will be able to discuss your options for free, this will make each option much clearer to you and you will be able to determine a specific price at this meeting regarding your revision surgery. Private clinics have a number of methods when collecting payments for the surgery, some will require payment in full, if this is the case you may wish to apply for a medical or bank loan, or dip into your savings id you have the money available to you. Other clinics will offer you payment plans in which you can pay the money off in installments; usually they also offer a period with no interest to encourage payment within a certain time frame.
