Atkins & Diabetes
The Atkins diet can be very dangerous for those who suffer from diabetes. The increased quantities of protein will put pressure on the kidneys (which could lead to kidney disease or even kidney failure) and the strict limitation of carbohydrates decreases blood sugar levels. For a diabetic this could lead to fainting spells, developing tremors or even lapsing into a diabetic coma.
If you are diabetic and want to go on the Atkins diet, seeking medical advice first is a must. A good nutritionist may be able to tailor an Atkins diet for you which limits rather than eliminates carbohydrates. While still possibly inadvisable, this would be the safest route for diabetics who wish to try out Atkins.
