It is rare for a woman to be able to say that her breasts are identical in size and shape. However, for most the size difference is minimal and will not be noticed by most people. Unfortunately, for a small percentage of women the size and shape difference can be great and can cause many concerns and often issues with self esteem. This is not something that you should feel ashamed of as it is far more common than you are probably aware as so many are too embarrassed to discuss this subject.
How to tell if you have Asymmetric Breasts
Very few women have breasts that are exactly equal and matching in size. However, for some it may be more noticeable and so more of a problem. If you feel very self conscious about the difference in size between your breasts then you can consult a doctor or plastic surgeon.
There is no set size difference which would indicate asymmetric breasts, it is entirely different for each individual. However, most experts would generally advise that if the size difference varies by at least one cup size you would class your breasts as asymmetric. Quite often this difference will first be noticed during puberty whilst the breast tissue is still developing. For the majority of women this difference is so slight that it is of little or no concern and often does not affect their lives in any real way. But for a small percentage of women this difference in breast size can have a negative effect on their lives as they struggle with this problem on a daily basis. If you think your breasts may be asymmetric and this is something thats concerning you, or if you are unsure it is best to contact your doctor, a surgeon or medical practitioner for advice.
Long term Effects of having Asymmetric Breasts
The biggest problem that women with asymmetric breasts encounter is mainly psychological. The difference in breast size often causes confidence issues leading women to feel the need to hide themselves away and feel afraid to discuss how they are feeling about their breasts with friends and family. Although asymmetric breasts don’t cause any physical problems it often has a lasting effect on how a woman feels about herself. You may find that you don’t feel comfortable in public in a swimming costume or find that you are struggling to find a successful relationship because of your anxiety over the difference in breast size.
If you are finding that your breasts are causing you problems in your day to day life then it may be advisable to contact a professional. It would also be advisable to confide in a close friend or family member as this is not something you should feel ashamed or worry about, as it is far more common than you would think.
Why you may want to Consider Breast Implants if you have Asymmetric Breasts
Although asymmetric breasts often do not cause any physical problems you may find that they have a severe impact on your self esteem. You may find that just by discussing how you are feeling about your breasts with your doctor that they may be able to find a way of helping you some other way without considering surgery.
However, if you find that you are psychologically struggling to complete your day to day activities you may feel that an elective cosmetic surgical procedure is your only option. Obviously this is something that you will need to discuss with your doctor at length to ensure that this is the best option for you. It may also be necessary (depending on the severity of your condition) to have multiple procedures in order to get the most even results possible. As asymmetric breasts do not cause any actual physical problems it is not advisable to decide on cosmetic surgery before considering all your other options. Your doctor will be able to discuss all the options with you which will vary depending on your individual situation.
If after consulting with your doctor you both decide that an elective cosmetic surgical procedure is the best way forward for you there are several different ways they can do this as outlined below:
- Increasing the size of the smaller breast
- Reducing the size of the larger breast
- Placing different sized implants in each breast
Once again, it is essential that you discuss the pros and cons of each type of procedure to ensure that you are choosing the best possible option for you and for your breasts.
Why you may want to Avoid Breast Implants if you have Asymmetric Breasts
As with any surgical procedure there are a number of risks and potential complications that you will need to consider. It is essential that all possible options are discussed at length with your doctor before deciding which option suits you best. Asymmetric breasts themselves do not cause any physical problems in most cases however you will often find that they can have a significant impact on your self esteem and confidence. In some situations it may be possible to resolve these psychological issues by discussing how you are feeling with a medical professional.
If you do not find that your asymmetric breasts cause you any real negative effect to you it would be best to avoid any surgical procedures. There is always a risk with any surgical procedure that something may go wrong or you may not get the result that you were hoping for. It is unlikely that any surgical procedure to correct asymmetric breasts will ever make your breasts identical and it would be unrealistic to expect this. So even if you opt to have cosmetic surgery to improve them and make your breasts more equal and even you will still need to accept that they will be different in size.
With all breast implant procedures there is a chance that something may go wrong with the implant, there is a possibility they may rupture or deflate, although this only occurs in a small percentage of cases it is something you need to be aware of. There is also a risk of infection, but again this is not something to worry about too much as long as proper after care procedures are followed.
