Can I Have Laser Therapy for my Acne?

There are a few circumstances that may rule you out from having laser therapy for your active acne. As there is little research into the treatment many of the reasons are more cautionary than scientifically proven. Until further, more respected research is performed it is best to stay on the safe side and avoid laser treatment for active acne if you fall into any of the following categories:

  • You should not undergo laser therapy if you suffer from diabetes
  • People with epilepsy should not undergo laser therapy. The use of bright lights that are part of the process could trigger an epileptic seizure.
  • Pregnant women should avoid having laser therapy. There is no proof that laser therapy will harm an unborn child but, at the same time, the procedure has not been shown to be completely safe. In the absence of good evidence either way it is best to simply not take the risk of permanently damaging a foetus.
  • If you are currently taking any medications that have a photosensitising effect you should not have laser therapy. Many common drugs used to treat other conditions can induce some degree of photosensitivity and combining them with laser treatment can make your skin dangerously sensitive to light and result in skin damage and even the development of skin cancers. Some common drugs with photosensitive effects include: some oral contraceptives, a number of antifungal medications and antibiotics as well as many more drugs of different kinds. Your practitioner will be able tell you if your medication is suitable for use alongside laser therapy. Never stop taking prescribed medication without first consulting your doctor.
  • If you are currently taking Isotretinoin to deal with your acne you may not be suitable for treatment as the drug can cause a number of problems when combined with other acne treatments such a laser therapy, dermabrasion and chemical peeling.
