As mentioned, Juvederm Ultra is not safe for everyone to take, as there are some contraindications. For the majority of patients, there are no problems with the dermal filler and they can have the treatment with no complications or adverse side effects. However, certain categories of people should not have Juvederm Ultra.
The majority of these contraindications are not specific to the brand Juvederm Ultra but more related to the whole class of dermal fillers. If you are hyposensitive hyaluronic acid, which is the main ingredient of the dermal filler, then you are more prone to side effects. You must tell your doctor immediately if you know of this condition because you may react badly to the treatment and suffer an allergic reaction. This may cause the injected areas to swell quite badly and become inflamed.
You should also tell the doctor if you are prone to hypotrophic scars. These are scars where excess scar tissue has formed and they can appear lumpy and raised on the surface of the skin. There is a chance that you may develop hypertrophic scars from this treatment if you are prone to the condition and therefore you may end up with marks upon your face. Hence, the best option is to tell your doctor about the condition and they can look into alternative treatments.
You should also mention if you have had any problems in the area that you want to have injected. If you are prone to acne or have had inflamed skin in the area, the treatment may aggravate this condition. Also, if injecting around the lips, you need to mention if you have cold sores. Cold sores are caused by a virus that resides on your skin and can become activated by the disruption of the skin caused by Juvederm Ultra.
The doctor should be informed if you have ever had treatment that affects your immune system such as chemotherapy. If this is the case, your immune system would be suppressed and could not fight off potential infections. Therefore, you are more prone to infections in this case and if your body struggles to fight off the infection, it can quickly become serious.
If you have had previous facial treatment, you may not be able to have the treatment. Juvederm Ultra should not be used in conjunction with other facial treatments such as chemical peels, laser treatments or Dermabrasion. The injection may not react well with the treatment you have already had and the results would not be beneficial as they may affect the previous outcomes from other treatments.
