Skin Grafting in Scar Reduction Surgery

Skin grafts can be used when treating scars, especially scars that are very large or wide, although this is considered a more drastic form of surgery and will only be used as a last resort. Skin will be taken from another part of your body and positioned over the scarred area. This will cover up the initial scar, leaving you with a mark in perhaps a less obvious position, such as the buttock or upper thigh. Skin grafts are more commonly used for scars that are incredibly tight and are impeding movement as unfortunately they are sometimes very visible, not helping to make your scar any less noticeable.
Due to the increased risks associated with skin grafting, this is more likely to be performed in a hospital and you are more likely to have some form of general anaesthetic.
