Dentistry Regulation in Malaysia

Established under the Dental Act of 1971, the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) is responsible for the regulation of all practising dentists in Malaysia, and is also in charge of issuing annual certificates to qualify dentists and clinics to continue practising. Furthermore many dentists are members of the Malaysian Dental Association, a board dedicated to promoting excellent standards of dentistry, a fact which members are often proud to display. Membership of the MDC is compulsory however so you must be confident that any dentist you are considering is a confirmed member. The general excellent standard of clinics offering treatment for medical tourists is a corollary of efforts by both the MDA and MDC to promote a high common standard and also to push boundaries in dental care.
Qualifications of Dentists in Malaysia
Any practising dentist in Malaysia must be officially approved by the MDC and be assessed annually to receive a yearly practising certificate. In this way the dental council manages to maintain consistent standards. To register with the Malaysian Dental Council a dentist must pass a university-equivalent degree in Malaysia. Furthermore many dentists choose to also register with the Malaysian Dental Association; to do this they must already be registered with the MDC and have an acceptable qualification, either from the MDC or otherwise, in addition to being a resident of Malaysia. Often a dentist with an MDA membership will proudly display it, and you should be more assured of high-standard treatment if you can ratify this.
Accreditation of Dental Practices in Malaysia
Dental clinics in Malaysia must be registered with the Ministry of Health. In order to achieve this, they must be able to prove that the dentist working is subject to the annual certificate. Otherwise, the Malaysian Dental Council relies more on maintaining the standard of dentists than monitoring the standard of the clinic. You can expect a lot of Malaysian clinics to have accreditation from the International Organisation for Standardisation under ISO 9001, but in general be prepared to find that the MDC focuses more on the annual renewal of dentists’ qualifications in order to maintain the high standard of dentistry throughout the country.
