Private 3D and 4D Baby Scans
As technology has advanced, more and more types of private baby scan have become available and today, you can see your baby in greater detail than ever before. Traditionally, ultrasound scans give 2D images, but now, you can also enjoy the wonders of 3D and even 4D scanning.
The aim of 3D and 4D baby scans is to give a better view of the baby than 2D scans; these types of scan provide more in-depth images and this gives you a greater appreciation of what your baby looks like, how it is changing and developing and how it moves; these scans can also be used to confirm the sex and provide information about the baby’s growth. 3D images show your baby in three dimensions, while a 4D image shows the 3D pictures with the added bonus of the dimension of movement. With a 2D ultrasound scan, you see the internal bone structure and a brief outline of the baby, which may appear a little blurred; with a 3D image, you can actually see its skin and make out the facial features. You can also track its movement, so you may catch the baby yawning or wriggling around.
The most obvious benefit of 3D and 4D baby scans for many parents is the improved quality of the images on the monitor; however, there can also be additional advantages of this form of scan, especially if an abnormality is detected or suspected. As the images are more detailed, they can provide more information for parents and also for doctors, which can help to plan ahead. In the case of a cleft lip, for example, the 3D scan can give more details about the nature of the problem, which may make it easier to plan treatment once the baby is born. In some cases, when a heart defect is suspected, a medical team will use 3D scanning to monitor the heart; however, this will only be the case if the team believes that the benefits outweigh the risks.
