After Liposuction Surgery

After liposuction surgery it is important to follow the advice that you will be given by your surgeon. Your experience after liposuction surgery will be very specific to the type of surgery you had and the extent of your liposuction.
- Pain - This is normally controlled using over the counter pain relief and can take up to two weeks to fully dissipate. For small amounts of liposuction, however, the pain is minimal and reduced by new techniques such as VASER or laser liposuction.
- Swelling – The swelling produced by liposuction can be quite severe due to the tumescent injections often used. These will lead to a build up of fluid that is usually left to drain through the open incisions after surgery. Swelling can take anything between two weeks and two months to fully disappear.
- Bruising – Again, this varies depending on the extent of the liposuction and the method being used. Bruising can last up to two weeks, but the amount of bruising has been seriously reduced by new liposuction techniques.
- Bandages – You will have to have bandages, or sterile dressings, over the incisions sites usually for at least 2 days after liposuction. Any sutures or drains that might have been fitted after the surgery will be removed after about a week.
It is essential that you allow yourself healing time after liposuction, and take enough time off work to ensure a full recovery. Usually, you ought to be able to return to work between 1 and 3 weeks after liposuction, and you will be able to participate in normal activities within a month or so.
The final results of liposuction might not be visible until a good few months have passed. This is due to the nature of the procedure. Loosened fat cells which aren’t removed can be easier to absorb naturally, so allowing the body to get rid of affected fat cells alone. Also it isn’t possible to see the full effect until all swelling and bruising has completely gone.
