Liposuction or Pills

There has been a rise in the number of weight loss pills available over the counter as more people become concerned with their appearance and look for weight loss methods that are affordable and easily obtainable.  Recently there has been an increase in publicity over the effectiveness of such pills, with the highly advertised ‘Alli’ produced by GlaxoSmithKline.  ‘Alli’ prevents the total absorption of fat from food by the intestine, and has been proven to help those on a low-calorie low-fat diet to lose weight.  However, it comes with some side effects, such as diarrhoea, bloating, wind and digestive problems and is unsuitable for those who have any health problems within the liver, intestine or on other medications.  Weight loss pills shouldn’t be seen as a solution that involves taking a pill and instantly losing weight.  They can only be effective if used while enforcing an effective exercise regime and a controlled diet.  Each different pill has different side effects, and could have different effects upon the body.  It is important that you discuss taking these pills with either your GP or a pharmacist so that you are not putting yourself at even more risk than a surgical procedure such as liposuction.
