Cosmetic Dentistry in Hungary

Since departing from communism for a democratic government in 1989, and joining the EU in 2004, Hungary has become more accessible to travellers from the UK and other European countries. Consequently, services it can offer to these people, including medical care, have also become more open. This fact, combined with the high level of training most dentists in Hungary attain, makes cosmetic dentistry as part of a medical holiday to Hungary extremely popular. Of course, the main consideration in most cases is the price, and substantial savings can be made on services if they are done in Hungary.
Teeth Whitening in Hungary
In a world where aesthetics and personal appearance are increasingly seen as highly important, and where celebrities that we see everyday are all resplendent with a set of pearly white teeth, everyday people have also become interested in having their teeth whitened to meet these standards. There are many things which can cause discolouration of the teeth – tea, coffee, smoking or even simply growing old. When it is often seen as so important to have these white teeth, anyone who does not may well feel a lack of self-confidence, or an unwillingness to smile. However, this does no longer have to be the case, and it is possible to get the celebrity white teeth at an affordable price, especially by seeking treatment abroad.
Tooth bleaching in Hungary
One method of whitening the teeth available to the medical patient in Hungary is tooth bleaching, where the teeth are simply bleached to change the colour. This bleach is a peroxide-based agent which is used for its ability to colour teeth to a believable shade of white. There are in fact a number of different methods used to achieve this end result, but overall the effects are the same. First your gums are protected by a rubber shield or even a gel, and then the agent is applied to the teeth, which it then spreads throughout. Generally this method will require you to remain in Hungary for a few weeks, where you may have to apply the bleach yourself in your accommodation, as well as attending check-ups, but you will be able to find this out from your dentist. It may be possible to continue the bleaching process at home in the UK.
Laser tooth whitening in Hungary
Another option you could seek is laser teeth whitening. This is a relatively new and state-of-the art technique that can effectively reduce whitening in a single session, though the price of course is greater than the basic process. Your gums are again protected by a shield, as laser treatment is inherently more risky to more sensitive areas. Next a laser is applied to the teeth, which rapidly increases the rate at which the bleach spreads through your teeth, and can in just one session leave you with teeth many shades whiter than before. The procedure takes about an hour, and does not differ in any significant way from any other EU-regulated country.
After your tooth whitening treatment in Hungary
You may wish, or may be advised to, stay in Hungary a few days after your treatment has been completed, as you may experience mild irritation around your gums for the first few days, and may wish to have this looked into if it persists. Similarly you may be free to return to the UK, but should still be in contact with a UK dentist should this irritation not disappear.
Porcelain veneers in Hungary
Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells made out of porcelain, which not only resembles the colour and texture of teeth, but is also highly durable. They are fitted over your existing teeth to create the effective of a healthy, white set. Veneers can be fitted in order to improve the appearance of stained, crooked, or otherwise damaged teeth, and are popular with medical tourists in Hungary as they are often much more expensive in the UK. Furthermore porcelain veneers are very resistant to staining and damage so, other than general maintenance, you should not have to undergo any more treatment.
Consultation and diagnosis for porcelain veneers in Hungary
Before your Hungarian dentist can begin the treatment, he or she must first assess you as to whether you are an eligible candidate for the treatment and then what exact treatment must be undergone, as porcelain veneers can be used to solve a range of problems, but must be applied in different ways for different sets of teeth. Your gums must be in a good condition before the treatment can begin, as they are crucial in ensuring its success. Although you can go some way to maintaining good gum health yourself, in some cases the dentist may have to treat the gums additionally before the treatment can begin. Once you and the dentist have agreed on the aesthetic you wish to achieve, and the dentist has checked your eligibility and accounted for any additional work that will be necessary, your initial appointment will be over.
Preliminary impression for porcelain veneers in Hungary
This next appointment will see the dentist taking off a thin layer of your teeth, usually 0.5mm (though potentially varying in the case of crooked or some damaged teeth), to make room for the veneers. An impression is then taken of this newly exposed layer of teeth, and this is subsequently sent off to the laboratory in which the veneers are created. However, after this external layer of teeth is taken off, you will be far more sensitive to the air and temperature, so you may wish to fork out a small extra fee for a temporary veneer to protect your teeth. If not, you will have to adhere to a strict brushing programme as detailed by the dentist.
Preparation for porcelain veneers in Hungary
The next appointment you go in for will be a preparation stage for the actual bonding. The veneers will be ready and will be tested on your teeth. This allows the Hungary dentist to make any adjustments to make absolutely sure that the veneers fit and appear as you want. Indeed, they may have to be adjusted further on an additional appointment, but this is aimed to ensure you get the best result, though you may have to adjust accommodation and travel bookings if the overall treatment is set to drag out substantially. Nonetheless, veneers can be difficult to correct once they have been fitted, so this stage is absolutely crucial and there is consequently no viable option but to see the procedure through.
Bonding of porcelain veneers in Hungary
Once the preparation is complete, the veneers will be properly bonded to your teeth in the final appointment. This usually takes between one and two hours, and the veneers are cemented to the teeth, resulting in a fixed, durable and aesthetically pleasing smile. The dentist will finish off the treatment by testing your bite and making sure the veneers are fitted exactly to request.
What to do after porcelain veneer treatment in Hungary
In most cases you will have to remain in Hungary for a few weeks following the treatment. This is because your teeth will still need to become used to the new veneers, and the dentist will probably want to check up on your progress, which makes proximity very useful. Furthermore if any problems should arise they can often be solved quickly if you are still in the area. Once you have returned to the UK, it is neither easy nor cheap to immediately return if you notice any problems. However, after this initial period, you can return to the UK. When booking flights and accommodation, you should have a good idea from the dentist as to how long the entire process will take, considering the post-treatment healing as well as any potential additional appointments. Once you are home you will need to attend fairly regular check-ups with your UK dentist to maintain the quality of your new veneers. Again, if you have established contact between the Hungarian and UK dentists (and this should not prove too difficult), they can communicate and an effective check-up plan can be created for you. Although generally speaking only about a tenth of the Hungarian population can speak English, the competitiveness of many dental clinics mean they have fluent members of staff, which is a useful tactic in light of English as the ‘lingua franca’, or international language of trade. It is unlikely, though not impossible, that you will have to further employ an interpreter or medical tourism provider in communications between the Hungarian and UK dentists.
Risks of porcelain veneer treatment in Hungary
Fortunately, the extremely high standards to which Hungarian dentists are trained mean that any dentist who has passed your background checks should be able to perform the treatment to the highest of standards. Similarly, the considerable esteem that Hungarian dentists are held in worldwide is not something the clinics take lightly. Nonetheless, there are inherent risks with the porcelain veneer procedure. Veneers deteriorate with time and there is nothing that can currently be done about this, though your check-ups will help preserve them as long as possible. The main risk is that veneers are irreversible, so if something does go wrong at any point, they cannot simply be removed, and any corrective surgery will be difficult and possibly expensive. Furthermore, veneers can shatter on impact, so you must be careful once you have had them fitted.
