Advantages & Disadvantages of Compression Garments
With the vast majority of all surgeons recommending surgical compression garments to their clients, it is widely recognised that these garments do offer some fantastic advantages.
Reducing the recovery time
The best advantage is arguably that the recovery period is often significantly reduced due to the garment helping to support the area that has been operated on. For example post surgical bras can help to support the breasts so you can get back to your normal routine faster.
Advantages of wearing compression garments
Some of the other advantages that compression garments can offer are;
- They help to reduce the chance of having any sort of infection after you have had your surgery
- They help to both increase and boost the blood circulation in your body
- The garments can also at times help to minimise scarring
- They can also help in surgeries that have required you to have an implant as they can help to keep this implant in place
Disadvantages of wearing surgical compression garments
Even though there are some great advantages to wearing the compression garments you should also think about the disadvantages. The first is that you should not put your compression garments into the washing machine or tumble dryer. The fact that you will have to wash the garments by hand can be extremely problematic especially if you are still feeling unwell from your surgery. To get around this problem you should buy two of the garments, although this will obviously be extremely expensive to do.
It is also important that you buy a good fitting compression garment because wearing one that does not support you in the right way can be extremely damaging. An ill fitting garment can cause implants to shift, increase the risk of infection and it can also increase the risk of getting raised and lumpy scars around the area of your surgery.
