Ready Made Surgical Compression Garments or Custom Made Garments

Before buying any compression garment you should discuss the best one to buy with your GP or surgeon. If you are having a relatively common surgery like breast augmentation then a ready made post surgical bra may be ok, however if you require a full body compression garment you may be advised to have one custom made to your body shape.

Ready made surgical compression garments

Ready made compression garments are obviously going to be easier to get and cheaper to buy. Although if the garment does not support you in the right way you may have to have further treatment or even more surgery to rectify the problems from the ill fitting garment. For example a badly made compression garment could cause an implant to shift which can only be rectified through having the surgery again.

Disadvantages of the readymade compression garment

The main down side to the readymade compression garment is that the fabrics do tend to be of a poorer quality, and because of this problem they may over stretch faster. So even though the ready made garments may be cheaper to begin with if you need to replace them all the time then perhaps a custom made garment would be more cost effective.

Also the readymade garments do tend to look better and more stylish due to the fact that they have to market them against other firms. However it is important to remember that they will be worn under other clothes and so getting a custom made garment that is less pleasing to the eye may be better for you in the long run.

Custom made compression garments

The best advantage of having a custom made compression garment is that you do not have to worry about them being ill fitting and causing you further problems after your surgery. It is also important to consider that the custom made compression garments will be made out of better fabrics. Some of the custom made garments are even lined with silk and cotton to ensure that you are comfortable when wearing it. The better quality fabrics can also help to support the body better and help to reduce scarring during the recovery period.
