Caring for Compression Garments
Before wearing your surgical compression garment you should first think about how you are going to care for it. There are several things that you can do to make sure that you get the most out of your money by taking the very best possible care of your garment.
Washing your surgical compression garment
You should firstly realise that your compression garment does need more care than an average piece of clothing, for example you cannot just put them in the washing machine with other washing. You should also try to wash your garment on a daily basis because the oils from your skin can have a negative impact on the fibres that are used to make the garment. You should also never use bleach when washing it and you should never use any sort of fabric softener as this could also damage your compression garment. After washing it you should always leave it to air dry.
Life span of your surgical compression garment
You should never wear your compression garment for more than 6 months, even if you have been advised to wear it for longer you should buy a new garment instead. There are several reasons for this, the main one being that your garment may have lost some of its compression and the garment could therefore be doing more harm than good in your recovery process. A useful way of getting around this problem is to buy several of the garments and simply alternate them so they will last longer and you will not have to buy any more at a later date.
When to wear your surgical compression garment
When advised to wear a compression garment, this generally means that you should be wearing it at all times. Most of the garments should also be worn when doing any exercise, as this will help to support the areas where you may be weaker. If you want a break from wearing any of the compression garments then you should make sure that you keep the area elevated when the garment is off. You should also ask your surgeon if you need to wear your compression garment at night and if so how long for.
You should also take a lot of care when putting on the garment as if you over stretch or tear the garment you will have to replace it. This is because the damage could mean that the garment may not be doing its job effectively.
