Elmex products contain a specially formulated fluoride known as elmex amine fluoride. This fluoride forms a protective layer on all tooth surfaces that is tightly bound for longer protection. It also claims to strengthen to enamel within seconds and repair cavities that have begun to form under the tooth’s surface.
Elmex have manufactured five specialised toothpastes:
- Elmex Anticaries Toothpaste with Amine Fluoride – This toothpaste is their most standard toothpaste. It claims to be a fast-acting formulation that hardens enamel and protects teeth from erosion and plaque formation. It is primarily targeted at people with permanent teeth for use on a daily basis.
- Elmex Intensive Cleaning – This toothpaste is for use just once or twice weekly to try and combat discolouration of the teeth die to tobacco, coffee, red wine etc. Elmex claims that this toothpaste includes polishing agents that make it harder for plaque to stick in the future.
- Elmex Menthol-Free Toothpaste – Like the Weleda Calendula toothpaste, this Elmex Menthol-Free toothpaste is also suitable for those receiving homeopathic medication. This toothpaste has had the typical minty flavour replaced by a fruitier one. Aside from the menthol-free aspect, this toothpaste maintains the same protection and cleaning qualities as the others in the Elmex range.
- Elmex Children’s Toothpaste – This has been specially designed to cater for the care and protection of milk teeth. IT has a milder flavour to encourage children to brush their teeth and it is recommended that this is done once a day at first (until the child’s 2nd birthday) and then twice a day after. There is also a reduced fluoride content to prevent fluorosis.
- Elmex Junior Toothpaste – This has been developed for 6-12 year olds. It has been formulated to deal with the changes occurring in the mouth between these ages as permanent teeth start erupting. During this process, the enamel is still fairly soft and vulnerable to cavities. To prevent this, the Junior toothpaste contains a higher concentration of fluoride to promote hardening of the teeth.
