Marvelon Contraceptive Pill

Marvelon is a brand of combined contraceptive pill that is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It is manufactured by Organon Laboratories Ltd. This form of pill is classed as a low dose pill, which contains two hormone derivatives that affect your menstrual cycle.

It is classed as a monophasic pill because every pill contains the same level of hormones within it. There are two hormones in Marvelon, 30 micrograms of ethinylestradiol which is a oestrogen derivative and 150 micrograms of desogestrel which is classed as a third generation derivative of progestogen. Together, these hormones prevent pregnancy by stopping an egg from being released, thinning your uterus wall and thickening your vaginal mucous fluid.

Marvelon is a 21-day pill so each strip contains 21 pills. You will use a strip of pills per cycle. You take one pill per day at the same time every day until you have finished your strip. Then you take a seven-day break where you will experience a withdrawal bleed. By not taking any pills in this time frame, you allow your uterus lining to break down and you experience a period.

The contraceptive pill has numerous advantages aside from its effectiveness. If used correctly, there is a 99% success rate. It is also a very efficient method of contraception and it will not interfere with sex. The pill also has the added bonus of regulating your periods. You will know when your period will start and when it does start it will be lighter and shorter than what you are used to. It may also reduce menstrual pain and some women use it solely for this purpose. However, the contraceptive pill will not protect you from any sexually transmitted diseases, as the only method of contraception that will do so is condoms.

As well as containing hormones, the pill contains a number of inactive ingredients. It contains potato starch, povidone, di-alpha-tocopherol, stearic acid and lactose. Therefore, if you have sugar intolerance, you should tell your doctor.
