What is Norgeston?
Norgeston is a form of contraceptive pill that is known as the “Mini pill”. It differs from the combined contraceptive pill because it only contains one hormone. It is manufactured by Schering Health and has a 99% effective rate. Its sole role is to protect you from pregnancy and it does this by controlling the menstrual cycle.
It is an everyday pill that needs to be taken every day at the same time every day in order to be effective. It is given in strips of 35 pills and you must take a pill every day until you have finished the pack. When you have finished the strip, you should start the next strip straight away so you do not have a pill free break unlike other contraceptive pills.
Norgeston contains 30 micrograms of levonorgestrel, which is a progestogen derivative. Progestogen is a natural hormone in your body that controls the menstrual cycle and the pill maintains a constant flow of this hormone to prevent you from becoming pregnant. It does this by thickening the mucous fluid to make it more difficult for the sperm to meet the egg and it also thins the uterus wall so that a fertilised egg will not be able to attach. In some women, it will also prevent an egg from being released but this does not always happen.
The pill is a good form of contraception because if it is used correctly, it is a very effective, reliable method. It also does not interrupt sex so it is very convenient. You do not have the worry of remembering to restart the pill after a week of stopping the pill because you take it every day. However, it will not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases and if you are more than three hours late in taking it, you will not be protected from pregnancy.
Every pill contains the same amount of the active hormone. They also contain sucrose, lactose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol 6000, talc, povidone, maize starch and montan glycol wax.
