What Reduces Ovranette’s Effectiveness?

Although the pill is very effective, there are a number of thing that can decrease its success. If you do not use the pill correctly, you run the risk of reducing its effectiveness and falling pregnant. You will not be protected if your pill is more than 12 hours late. Make sure that you use the pill as instructed to ensure maximum success.

Medications can also affect how the pill works.  If you use some medication at the same time as the pill, they can interact and the pill may not be as effective. For instance, if you use any medication to treat epilepsy or HIV, the pill may not work correctly. Also, antibiotics and anti-fungal medication such as Griseofulvin can render the pill ineffective. Medication to treat Tuberculosis and some sedatives such as Barbiturates can also have a similar effect. Herbal remedies can also affect the pill such as St Johns wort. Therefore, it is important that you tell your doctor if you are using any medication so that they can check that it will not affect your contraception. Your doctor will most likely advise you to use additional contraception if you are using these medications in the short term but you may need to change to a method of contraception that is not affected by your medication if you need the medication for a long period of time.

The pill also affects some medications. If you use insulin or anti-diabetic drugs, the pill can change their levels in the blood and the doctor may need to alter your dose. If the pill is causing adverse effects on your medication and therefore your health, you may need to change to another contraceptive method.

If you have sickness or diarrhoea, there is a chance that you might not be protected from pregnancy. The correct amount of hormones may not have had enough time to enter your blood stream and you may not have full protection. Continue to take the pill but use extra protection for the duration of your illness and for seven days after.
