Finasteride & Erectile Dysfunction

The drug finasteride works by blocking the conversion of the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. Finasteride is marketed in many forms and under lots of different names such as Proscar and Propecia.

Finasteride is commonly used for treating men with enlarged prostrates and it can also be used to treat baldness. Finasteride’s relationship with erectile dysfunction is a lot more sinister as it is one of the side effects of the drug and it has left many men with irreversible sexual dysfunctions such as impotence and abnormal ejaculations.

Erectile Dysfunction as a Side Effect

The three main ways that finasteride contributes to erectile dysfunction is decreasing the libido, causing impotence and decreasing the ejaculation amount. It has also been the case that many men who have taken finasteride have suffered from long term erectile dysfunction with these conditions lasting even up to 5 years after they have stopped taking the drug.

Some men that have suffered from this side effect have also found that the usual treatments of Viagra or pelvic muscle exercises have not helped regain a normal erection that they had before they were prescribed Finasteride. It has also been found that Finasteride can also have a negative effect on your sperm and therefore your fertility. Finasteride can also affect the testosterone levels within your body and can lead to a low semen count and quality.

Finasteride on the NHS

Finasteride is not currently available on the NHS as a hair loss treatment but it can be prescribed by a GP at a private clinic which often makes the tablets extremely expensive. Finasteride is available on the NHS to treat prostrate enlargement although the side effects and risks of the drug do remain the same.
