Peyronie’s Disease & Erectile Dysfunction

Peyronie’s disease is another cause of erectile problems. This disease is caused by scar tissue forming on the penis which can then cause the penis to bend. This makes intercourse extremely difficult and very painful.

Only 1% of men suffer from Peyronie’s disease and these men tend to be middle aged, but it is possible for younger and older men to suffer from the disease.

Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease

The symptoms of this disease do vary depending on the individual; it can either develop over a long period of time or even over night. The hardened tissue also known as plaque is not visible when the penis is soft as you can only see the effects of the disease when the penis is erect.

It is common that once the disease has been established the pain does reduce although the curve or bend in the penis may still cause you problems for a long time.

Diagnosing Peyronies Disease

It is important that if you suspect that you have this disease you must book an appointment with your GP. Your GP will ask you about if you have had any injuries or previous problems which could have caused your present condition.

The GP may also want to go ahead with a biopsy which involves removing some tissue from the infected area to be looked at further.

Treating Peyronie’s Disease

This disease is treatable although most GP’s would advise that because the disease can improve without any medical treatments that you should wait up to 2 years to see if it heals.

If the condition does not go away then there are surgeries that are available to solve the problem. The first surgery that you can have is to remove the hardened scar tissue from the penis. The other alternative surgery is to alter the tissue from the opposite side of the penis that the plaque is affecting to counter the curving effect. These two surgeries do have side effects which include making the penis smaller and affecting the rigidity of the penis when erect.

The other option for treating Peyronie’s disease is vitamin therapy where vitamin E is prescribed to help fight the disease, it is also claimed that this vitamin can help prevent Peyronie’s disease.
